Dutch Australian Society ‘Abel Tasman’ Inc
Car Rally
Saturday, 15th March 2008
This year the course was designed by Mike Meerding. He led us through South Hobart to have a look at a park there, and then down to Battery Point. There’s an interesting little park near the CSIRO on the waterfront, named after a white knight.
Then up Mt Nelson to see the Swift Parrot story, and down the other side via Proctors Road and its many bridges to Kingston. A brief stop at the Tasman Limited to find out which Dutch dishes are available there, before finally making a sprint for lunch at the Museum. There is an alternate route from Margate to Snug, and very picturesque it is too, but we all chose to leave it for another time, without a wolf at the door.
The front seat got to drive and navigate and answer about 40 questions. The back seat had 15 photos to study and work out where Mike took them. When all was said and done, there was a tie for first and second place. After much consideration, Mike decided that because the Nugteren team had travelled 43km, and the Wierenga team managed with 40km, the long distance travellers would be awarded second place.

The winners – Team Wierenga

Second place – Team Nugteren
Mike also took the trouble to bring his gas BBQ, so we all enjoyed a wonderful lunch under the old cypress tree on a glorious day. A guided tour of the Museum exhibits was an extra bonus.
