Queen’s birthday celebration 2008
Wednesday, 30th April 2008
To celebrate the 70th birthday of Queen Beatrix, a reception was held at the Welcome Inn, Kingston. About 65 people attended, including our patron, the Honorary Consul for the Netherlands, Mr George Huizing. Honorary guests were the Mayor of Kingborough, Graeme Bury, and the Chairman of the Tasmanian Convention Bureau, Vin Barron, with his wife Kaye.
Highlights of the evening included toasts to the Queen of Australia, proposed by the Consul, and to the Queen of the Netherlands, proposed by the Mayor. Two members, Magda Steenhuis and Coby Dobromilsky, were awarded life membership in recognition of their unstinting service to the Society over several decades – their Committee work and behind the scenes work contributing greatly to the growth and welfare of the Society. A minor highlight was the rookworst made especially for the Society by Ziggy’s. This was served after the toasts and proved very popular. Finally, a display of the proposed new building for the Channel Heritage Museum was put up for the enlightenment of the members.
