Saint Nicholas/Sinterklaas visit 2009
Saturday, 5th December 2008
This year Sinterklaas again arrived at Dru Point, exactly on time. Due to some gusty winds, the Sint and his helpers transferred from Jack’s big boat to Andrew’s little one to get to the jetty.
The Sint was officially received by the President, Dr Freddie, who welcomed him to Tasmania. Everybody then escorted the Sint and his Zwarte Pieten to the DAS Marquee.
Once on his throne, Sinterklaas explained to the children where he had been that day, and what he still had to do. Then Zwarte Piet helped the Sint read the names of all the very good children from a big book. One by one, the children were given a small present. Some children got to sit on Saint Nicholas’ knee and have their photo taken.
Many children brought along a picture that they had coloured in. Sinterklaas was very impressed with the work the children had done. He asked his helpers to stick them all up on the wall of the tent next year, so that he could have a better look at them. He also said that next year he would bring a prize for the best colouring in.
After Sinterklaas and the Black Peters went back to the boat, Yolanda led the children in two games – pass the parcel and a treasure hunt. This was greatly enjoyed by all the children.
Special thanks to Jan Visser and Mike & Evelyn Meerding for helping the Sint. Also to Jack, Andrew, Martin, Kees, Irene, Arnold, Betsy & Eilef, Freddie, and Yolanda for doing their bit to make the day memorable.
