Abel Janszoon Tasman was born in 1603 in the Netherlands, in a village in what is now the municipality of Grootegast, in the province of Groningen.

Today Grootegast in the Netherlands has a sister-city relationship with Kingston, in the southern Tasmanian shire of Kingborough. Kingborough is home to several thousand Dutch migrants and their descendants.
