The Abel Tasman Art Prize™

The Dutch Australian Society collaborates with the Kingborough Council and the Education Department to select a student for the Abel Tasman Art Prize™ every second year.

The theme of the Prize is “Journeys”, to commemorate the fact that Abel Tasman, the first European to discover Tasmania, undertook an epic voyage into the unknown.

The Art Prize is open to pre-tertiary art students (Year 11 or 12) studying at a southern Tasmanian school. The student should be studying, or have studied, art production or visual arts and media. The winning artwork is acquired by the Kingborough Council. The inaugural competition was held in 2000.

The major prize is a 3-week trip to the Netherlands and all travel expenses are covered.

The Abel Tasman Art Prize™ is held in conjunction with Grootegast, the sister-city of Kingston, and the birthplace of Abel Tasman in the Netherlands. The competition alternates each year between the two cities.

The Dutch Australian Society provides the prize for the Peoples’ Choice Award, and hosts the winners from Holland on alternative years, arranging various functions and sightseeing tours while they are here.
